Dales Way Stage 1
20 kilometres / 12 miles
Ordnance Survey Explorer 1:25 000 Map 297 Lower Wharfedale & Washburn Valley
The Dales Way starts at Ilkley Bridge but does not cross the River Wharfe here.
Bolton Bridge to me is where the Dales begin. Walking out from under the new bridge, crossing a small field to climb the steps onto the old bridge take a few moments to take in the view north and the Yorkshire Dales rising in front of you.
The Dales Way is a gentle stroll from here keeping to the western banks of the River Wharfe up to the remains of the Augustinian Bolton Priory. A minuscule detour to investigate the ruins is well worth while.
You have two choices here, either cross the river by way of the long wooden bridge or be more daring and try your balancing skills on the stepping stones!
