OK the Boots are very dark brown

I'll come back to these statements later in the review.

Mummut Mt Trail GTX at Top Withins

If you look at the Mammut Web site for these boots, and other boots developed by Mammut, you will see that they are brimming with technology such as TPU inserts, PV wedge, MT-Traction Sole and written on the side of the boot is Motion Control, but what does it all mean.

Not wanting to make the review pages long, when the average reader would lose the will to live if I expanded on the technology abbreviations and what they all mean (you can look into it yourself on the very informative and well designed Mammut web site), however Motion Control caught my eye.  Briefly it's all down to the interior of the boot, the memo foam on the tongue and ankle together with pads on the instep, shin bone and ankle provide lateral support, does it work the short answer is yes.

I tested the boots on a walk along part of the Pennine Way and also the Yorkshire Moors over rough and boggy terrain.  I fell into deep water-filled camouflaged undulations which could have resulted in a twisted ankle, however, the boots which felt as if they had been moulded to the shape of my foot did not move around the ankle.  The lateral support was exceptional and is something I have not experienced to such an extent before in a walking boot.  I did, however, have the wrong socks on; I wore thick socks which I usually wear in winter which caused some rubbing on my little toe.  The interior of the boot fits like a glove and the memory foam moulds to your feet giving the feel of an individual fit.  I have re-tested using a thinner sock and the fit was much better, don't worry about cold feet, the inner described as average warming ability was in fact very warm with excellent breathability and waterproofing.  At the end of our walk in the Pennines the temperature was well below freezing but my feet to use an old expression were 'as warm as toast'.

The boots have a vibram sole (say no more) which have been developed with Mammut and on these boots have a high tread depth.  The traction provided under various conditions was superb and I soon had the confidence to stride out on wet stone or mud.  The boots retained very little debris within the gaps and this was easy to remove when cleaning.  I really like the feel of these boots and the technology that has been invested in them.

Back to the colour they are very dark brown, one might even say black, but I have been assured by my wife, who is a natural brunette that they are dark brown, however, I think her hair is black.

In Summary

Regardless of the boots being dark brown or black they are excellent quality with the added bonus of an interior which fits like a glove to your individual foot size, providing lateral support, warmth and comfort, highly recommended.

I’ll provide more detail about the construction of the boot and its durability in my next review
