IRVINE VALLEY WALKING FESTIVAL
The 5th Irvine Valley Walking Festival is taking place over the weekend of 11, 12 and 13 May 2007 and covers the Irvine Valley towns of Hurlford, Galston, Newmilns and Darvel in East Ayrshire.
A varied programme of 14 walks are offered - all of which evolve around the rich natural and industrial heritage of this rural area.
The Irvine Valley Trail is 12 miles long and stretches for the entire length of the Irvine Valley from Hurlford in the west to Loudoun Hill in the east. A fast paced walk will take around 4 hours to complete while a more moderately paced version which allows walkers to stop and start as they want.

This year is the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Loudoun Hill – a victory for Robert the Bruce in 1307 – and a dedicated walk will take place to the site of the battle.
Darvel’s walks include the Gallowlaw Cairn Walk, the Long Cairn Walk, and Distinkhorn & the Crashed plane – the remains of a crashed 1950s plane are still clearly seen scattered around the area.
Newmilns walks include The Darvel TV Mast, Lady Floras’s Walk with a visit to Loudoun Kirk and The Bluebell Planting which includes a Natural History talk. Galston walks are the South Bank Trail and Cessnock Woods.

All the walks range from 5- 12 miles and vary in their challenge to walkers.
There are a number of shorter interest based walks to Lanfine House, Allseasons Development and Loudoun Castle Park.
Other events include a Bat Walk, a Keep Fit Taster session, a Ski taster session and a 25 mile cycle run.

A great weekend out of doors in the tranquil countryside of the Irvine Valley.
