To the south west of Switzerland lies the canton of Valais, the third largest in the country. Its artury is the River Rhône running the length of the canton from Gletsch in the north east through Brig, Visp, Sierre, Sion, Martigny and Monthey before it enters the eastern end of Lac Léman (Lake Geneva). The river is feed from some of the best walking valleys in the Alps Lötschental Saastal Mattertal Val d'Anniviers Val d'Hérens Val de Nendaz Val de Bagnes Val d'Entremont Val Ferret and Val d'Arpette and has some of the greatest views including the Matterhorn hovering above Zermatt.
The Valais is also host to the Swiss section of the Walker's Haute Route from Chamonix to Zermatt a high level route over 180km long linking these two great alpine centres and a section of the Tour of Mont Blanc between the Grand Col Ferret where it leaves Italy and the Col de Balme where it enters France having passed through Ferret, La Fouly, Praz de Fort, Champex and Les Grands. The section from Champex to the Col de Balme or visa versa are sections of both routes.
Behind the village of Bettmeralp is the longest glacier in the Alps, the Grosser Aletschgletscher a 25km block of ice formed from the peaks of the Bernese Oberland to the north.

Matterhornstate is the main tourist web site for the Valais region
