Walking in Sweden part of the Walking on the Web guide to walking in Europe

Visit Sweden

Abisko Sweden's Natural Wonder

Abisko Mountain Station is situated in the most northern part of Swedish Lapland, 250 km north of the Arctic Circle. It is the Swedish Touring Club’s (STF) largest and oldest resort recently celebrating its 100th year (2002); a truly classic mountain station opened at the turn of the century. Abisko Mountain Station is located in Abisko National Park, famous for its wildlife, rare flowers and its breathtaking scenery. It also has the lowest precipitation in the whole of Sweden?

Sweden has over 400 waymarked walking routes throughout the country from woodland walks to arctic trails

Warning Swedish weather can change in half an hour, from brilliant sunshine to snowstorms, strong winds, hailstone or mist. A bit like Manchester then!

Walking Routes

Nordkalottleden Trail (Kalottireitti)
800km trail through the arctic fell regions of Finland, Sweden and Norway.

The Blekingeleden is a 250km hiking trail through forest, grazing land and coastline.

The 440km Kungsleden (the King's trail) from Abisko Mountain Station to Hemavan past Sweden's highest mountain Kebnekajse and through some of Sweden’s most spectacular scenery. The mountain cabin infrastructure both manned and un-manned is well developed along the trail allowing walkers to complete the route using daysacks during the summer walking season.

Skåne trail

The Skåneleden Trail links together four main footpaths the Ridge to Ridge, the North to South, the Coast to Coast and the Osterlen to form a walking route over 930km long. The Skåneleden Trail is divided into approximately 70 one day walking stages and with the exception of a few stretches of the Osterlen Trail there is a night shelter with a toilet, water for washing and drinking and firewood every night.

Skånetrafiken provides public transport in Skåne and the Oresund Region to get you around the route.

Ridge to Ridge 140km (Ås till Åsleden) The Ridge-to-Ridge trail begins at Tingsvalla campsite in Åstorp and ends at Agusa.

Please have a look at what Johan and his family have to offer in Sweden

My name is Johan Postma and together with my wife and children I am going to move abroad to Sweden, to the little village of Edsleskog in the province of Dalsland where we are going to lead Edsleskogs Wärdshus (Guesthouse of Edsleskog).
The Wärdshus has 10 nice rooms and lies in the middle of typical Swedish nature and walkingpaths. I name; The Nidaros Pilgrimspath and Storspåret (Regional Long Distance walking path) to the world’s number two most beautiful town on earth under 10.000 inhibitants in 2005, named åmål. In the backyard of the Guesthouse you find Lake Edslan and next to the Wärdshus you find Dalsland highest hill named “Baljåsen”.

The Wärdshus is well known among Swedish walkers and I will hereby recommend the whole area, the pilgrimspath, storspåret and the accomodation in Edsleskogs Wärdshus.

Further information you will find on our (still under construction website www.hotelinzweden.com) . Together with www.vildmarksguide.com we can arrange guided walks after booking / reservation and for all who are looking for a combination of walking and a “feel good” experience we can arrange a combination reservation at the welness-spa you will find under www.kloverud.se .
At the end of a walking day we gladly offer everybody a cool glass of wine, beer or hot cup of coffee in the hot-tub at the lake side where everybody asks themself… when will I ever see the sun go down tonight?

SMÅLAND

Gislaved

The longest is Gislavedsleden (80 km) that starts from the west part of the district from the border of County Halland (Kinnared) in the south and continues to Isaberg in the north. It is part of a hiking trail E6 crossing all of Europe, so if you want to continue hiking southwards, you could end up in Italy or why not hike north to our neigbouring country Finland! The experienced hiker is usually satisfied with a couple of days walking while somebody else might just hike a short stretch. There are possibilities to stop overnight both outdoors in windshielded areas and to sleep a little bit more comfortable in a chalet.

Also in the western part of the district there is Lalåsen trail (4 km) and Knavraboleden trail (3 km). Along both paths you can read about the surrounding nature and forestry.

Nissanleden trail (10 km) is a nice little hike along the river Nissan between Vikabo north of Smålandsstenar and Skeppshult.

In Stengårdshult there is Prästavägen (12 km) and the name indicates it was the path the vicar rode between the two churches in Norra Unnaryd and Valdshult.

Fornminnesleden in Öreryd (7 km alternatively 3 km) follows a trail of burial grounds from the iron age and several grave stones.
