From Portpatrick on the Irish Sea
to Cockburnspath close to the North Sea this National Trail crosses the southern
uplands of Scotland. This is a long walk through remote countryside with very
few major towns on route and limited accommodation for those not carrying their
own tent. The National Trail spannered thistle is used to way mark the route.
There are Youth Hostels at
Minnigaff, Kendoon, Wanlockhead,
Broadmeadows, Melrose, Abbey St Bathans and Coldingham SYHA
and bothies
at The Beehive near Laggangarn, White Laggan south of Loch Dee, Manquhill north
of Dalry, Chalk Memorial at the head of the Water of Ken near Polskeoch, east
of Daer Reservior at Brattleburn and north east of Ettrick Head at Over Phawhope
There are
links to St Cuthert's Way and the Central Scottish Way at Lauder
