Walking
in Portugal
part of the Walking on the
Web guide to walking in Europe
Weather
Best walking months are September through to May. Like all of the southern countries of Europe the summer is far to hot for walking to be enjoyable
Animal dangers
Snakes, Scorpions, Bees, Wasps and Dogs are all potential treats for the wary walker. The real danger with snakes is if you accidently stand on one. A viper will turn and bite so be very cautious under foot. The same goes for scorpions in the summer.
Via Algarviana 200km across the Algrave from Alcoutim to Cabo de São Vicente. An additional trail is being created from Alcoutim to Val Verde del Camino in Spain to join the E7 European Walking Route
National Parks
Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerés was the first of Portugal's National Parks established in 1971. The 703km sq park covers four granite mountain massifs in the North West of Portugal, the Serra da Peneda, Serra do Soaja, Serra Amarela and the Serra do Gerés. Boarding the Spanish province of Orense and the Parque Natural Serra do Xures the high pastures are home during the summer to shepards and their livestock and not much else so the area has had very little human impact brought upon it.
A network of trails are being established by the park authorities that will eventually link together to form a long distance walking route through the area (trilho pedestre de longo curso)

Parque Natural da Arrábida
Parque Natural da Ria Formosa
Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela Mainland Portugal's highest mountain range is the basis of this national park. The Torre plateau at 1993m forms a natural boundary between north and south providing a tourist attraction for the Portugese in summer and winter alike. Because of the alpine conditions experienced in winter there modest ski facilities in Torre.
A network of marked trails have been established in the park and maps are available from the national park. There are three main linear routes through the park T1, T2 and not suprisingly T3. T1 is the longest at approximately 90km stretching the length of the park from Vide to Guarda and taking in the summit of Torre. T2 and T3 are both approximately 80km long, T2 taking a western route and T3 an eastern route along the Serra. Both T2 and T3 walking routes start at Longa and finish in Gauda.
