The start of the Wolds Way is not on the Wolds but by the banks of the Humber at Hessle Haven a small inlet off from the mighty estuary but what a fantastic view to start a walk. The mighty estuary and the even mightier Humber Bridge.

Ordnance Survey Explorer 293 Kingston upon Hull & Beverley

Straight away the route is sharing with others the Trans Pennine Way and the E2 and E8 European Long Distance Walking Route as it heads under the bridge. Just beyond there is a footpath off to the right leading up on to the bridge which would then link to the Viking Way. The estuay is followed to North Ferriby before turning inland just beyond the houses.

Leaving behind the Trans Pennine Way and the E8 the path joins the Beverley 20 into Long Plantation utilising a footbridge to get over the railway line. Its then out of one plantation and into another but first you have to cross the busy A63 trunk road coming out of Hull.

Vessey Hill

Vessey Pasture Dale and Back Dale the track levels off and follows the edge of the field. As the track begins to curve to the left a small path enters a small copse to the left. Both a path arrow and a national trail acorn are afixed to trees to guide you through.

The Centenary Way goes left, the Wolds Way goes right and only the people who live at Wharram Percy Farm go straight on. Looking to the left as you walk along the green lane you will see the start of Deep Dale and watch it grow as you progress further.

The track widens to green shelf above the dale as it passes the North Plantation after which it picks up the Centenary Way again and continues onward to North Plantation 2

As Deep Dale curves around to the north the ruined church at Wharram Percy comes into view and the Centenary Way leaves again but not for long! The wide shelf gradually narrows on the approach to Wharram Percy and although firm under foot there is a distinct lefthand slope to the path as it descends to the mill pool.
