From the confluence with the River Ure close to Boroughbridge in North Yorkshire the route follows a line closeish to but not always along the bank of the Swale to finish not at the head of the Swale near Keld but further over the hills in Kirkby Stephen in Cumbria. The walk links with the Yoredale Way at Boroughbridge, shares a section of the Coast to Coast and crosses the Pennine Way at Keld
