part of the Walking on the Web guide to walking in England
|
Stage 8 follows a wide track all the way from Horton in Ribblesdale to Hawes and as such requires minor navigational skill. The ascent up to Cold Keld Gate is not difficult either with a gradual incline. There are good views of all three of the Three Peaks of Yorkshire, Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough as well as the Ribblehead Viaduct.

The Pennine Way leaves Horton in Ribblesdale via a walled track to the right of the Lion Inn.
On route to Hawes Ribble Way Dales Way and the Three Peaks of Yorkshire challenge walk.
The Pennine Way continues along the track whilst the Dales Way drops into the valley to the left and Cam House farm. Having past through a gate across the track a gentle ascent leads to tarmac that is followed up to the next gate. This time the footpath sign indicates a left turn. Don't go through the gate! Follow the new track (West Cam Road) taking the right fork at Ten End Pens Ground and descend towards Gayle and Hawes
