Circular route around Oldham starting at Dovestone Reservoir. The route goes in an anti-clockwise direction initially heading north over Saddleworth Moor passing the Obelisk, Sugar Loaf and Slades Rocks before descending towards the village of Diggle. Here it joins the Standedge Trail to go over the Standedge railway tunnels to meet the A62 and the Pennine Way.

The walk now follows the route of the Pennine Way across a section of Close Moor before reaching a cairn and a series of fords. The Pennine Way continues north and the Oldham Way turns west towards Hind Hill before making its descent towards Denshaw by way of Moor Lane and the dam at the bottom of New Years Bridge Reservoir. The way doesn't go into Denshaw but takes a northerly loop around it to meet with the Crompton Circuit just south of Cherry Tree Farm.
