King's Way walking route

Starting at the Roman Forth in Portchester and ending in Winchester the route was devised in memory of Allan King an early contributor to the work of the Hampshire Area Rambler's Association.

The walk initially follows the northern bank of Portsmouth Harbour before crossing a sports field, turning north. After crossing the A27, a minor road to the left is taken that crosses the M275 motorway before turning right to Fort Nelson and Nelson's Monument.

Having gone around the front the walk now takes in the back of the Fort to join Swivelton Lane heading north again. It continues north having left the lane just beyond Manor Farm. Between Grub Coppice and a wood on the right, cross a footbridge over Wallington River and turn right at the bottom of Blackhouse Lane. Don't go up the lane! The path leads you to the Boarhunt Mill. Don't go through the mill to the road but keep to the path taking you east along the northern edge of the water coarse.

Straight across the minor road, bit of a zig zag through Staplecross Copse and cross the B2127 at Lodge Farm.

From Lower Beckford follow the green lane to the left. At it's end turn right along the road to World's End

The Wayfarer's Walk joins the King's Way from the right and the two routes run together to Soberton

Bishop Waltham's Palace

There is a crossroads with the Monarch's Way in Upham

There are links with the Wayfarer's Walk, the South Downs Way, the Three Castles Path, the Ox Drove Way and the Claredon Way. By utilising sections of the way with the South Downs Way or the Ox Drove Way there are possibilities for smaller circular routes from Winchester.
