The new National Trail opened in May 2003. From Bowness on Solway to the Roman Fort of Segedunum at Wallsend the walk follows the line of Hadrian's Wall, A World Heritage Site.
To start from west to east you have to get to Bowness on Solway. At most times of the year it's not a problem but beware. There are many signs between Burgh by Sands and Bowness that indicate the potential dangers of tidal flooding! Don't worry the signs are very informative giving you approx depths of water along the route!

So get some dutch courage in the Kings Arms in Bowness, go to the WC next door and off you go. As its a new route the waymarks are excellent, there are lots of people doing it and it's flat. Before you do set off however make sure you take in the view over the marshes out into the Solway Firth.
From Bowness the route heads over
fields past the Duck Inn campsite
where it joins a hardcore farm track to Glasson before turning back to the coast
at Drumburgh where it meets the Cumbria Coastal Path to follow the road along
the edge of Burgh Marsh to Dykesfield and Burgh by Sands beyond. An embankment
runs along the land side of the road should you get taught out by the tide.
The Greyhound Inn in Burgh by Sands does food if you're hungrey already. From Burgh fork left across fields to join a track into Beaumont a compact village on the banks of the River Eden. The river is followed to Kirkandrews on Eden where another series of fields is crossed before rejoining the river to enter Carlisle.

The
West Coast Mainline from London to Glasgow passes through Carlisle as well as
it being the western terminus of the Tyne Valley Line.
Carlisle is also the northern terminus of the Cumbria Way
Pennine Way close to Once Brewed YHA
Tyne
Valley Train Line with stops at Newcastle, Corbridge, Haydon Bridge, Bardon
Mill, Haltwhistle and Brampton
