From behind the Nottingham Forest Football Ground where the canal meets the River Trent to Grantham the route follows the old canal built in 1797 and now disused. It creates a meandering route through open countryside, pleasent villages and parts of the Vale of Belvoir. The Viking Way crosses its path and the route has connections with "Crossroads", Laural & Hardy and Issac Newton.

From the River Trent briefly follow a short section of canal before navigating the A6011 / A6520 road junction. Once across rejoin the canal bank along the side of the A6011. The canal then turns under the east bound section of the road where you then have to cross the west bound road and head off south before bending left to pass a supermarket on the right and then meeting with the A52 trunk road at Gamston

Beyond the A52 and a minor road 100m further on the canal enters open country for the first time. The towpath here is also used by the local riding school so beware horses! It's now a simple case of following the canal and having crossed the road to Cotgrave it enters the Cotgrave Country Park an area of land redeveloped on the site of the old Cotgrave Colliery.
