Although the title suggests a river this path mainly follows an old towpath on the Ipswich to Stowmarket Navigation from Stowmarket where it connects with the Mid Suffolk Footpath and Ipswich. The route is signed with finger posts carrying the name "Gipping River path".

At each end and convieniently in the middle at Needham Market there are railway stations providing a useful public transport link.
