Along an old railway line from Start Hill close to Junction 8 of the M11 the route runs along the edge of Hatfield Forest Country Park and the start of the Forest Way to Takeley where it crosses the Harcamlow Way. The walk and by the way cycle route continues to follow the old railway line through Canfield End to Great Dunmow where it enters the town.

The walk departs Great Dunmow via the B184 Chelmsford Road to Hoblong's Bridge from where it follows the top end of a line of woods before turning north to join the railway line again to Rayne and straight into the centre of Braintree close to the railway station
