From Skelwith Bridge (PH)
the route follows the eastern bank of the River Brathay initially through wood
at the side of the road that can be tricky under foot from the numerous roots
you have to negotiate and then into open pasture up to Elter Water and another
wood. Open pasture again before the route is channelled back to the river which
has now changed its name to Great Langdale Beck giving an indication of what
lies ahead. Elterwater is a busy Lakeland village with a fine pub the Brittania
Inn, a Post Office opposite and a small
across the bridge
.
The walk crosses the bridge and turns right on a tarmac road on the left bank
of the river. The road goes up to the slate quarry whereas our route turns right
again and crosses a footbridge to Chapel Stile next to the Wainwright Inn. There
is also a conveinence store in the village, Baysbrown
and the dales bus route passes through
.
You now enter Great Langdale dominated
by the Langdale Pikes it is a magnificent U shaped valley. Out of Chapel Stile
turn left towards Baysbrown campsite cross the beck turn right and follow its
bank to the next bridge. Turn left here up to Oak Howe at which point the route
goes off over open fields traversing the lower slopes of Oak Howe Needles to
Side House. At this point depending upon where you wish to go next you can either
continue on this side of the beck up to the National Trust Campsite before rejoining
the main route at the Old Dungeon Ghyll or cross the beck to the New
Dungeon Ghyll (PH) ![]()
and follow the main path to the old hotel. Old Dungeon Ghyll has The famous
Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel "probably the greatest pub in the world",
the termini of Langdales bus service
and a great National
